Serving the Church
"For the body does not consist of one member, but of many." - 1 Corinthians 12:14
Let’s be honest: it’s easy for church to become a spectator sport. Even at Redeemer where we value community in small groups, Sunday can feel like the main event. Since there are a handful of people (primarily Dusty and the worship team) that are more visible than others, it can feel like "the work of the ministry" is taken care of since they are so consistently present and visible.
Paul's language in 1 Corinthians 12 paints a different picture of the body of Christ. As opposed to the body being one member (or just a few), Paul uses the imagery of the human body. A complete body is one in witch all the members - hands, feet, head, eyes, etc - all work together, not separately. In Romans 12 Paul says, "in one body we have many members," but "do not all have the same function." When one body member does not complete its function, the rest of the body suffers.
One of the challenges of a growing church is its need for more volunteers. The more people that visit and join Redeemer, the more people there will be to serve on any given Sunday. Volunteers are the front line at Redeemer. More often then not, a visitor's first interaction with Redeemer on a Sunday will be with someone who is serving on the Connect Team or in the Children's Ministry. The role of a volunteer is not second-class as it relates to the ministry of our church. In light of this increasingly important need I thought I would share a few ways that you could volunteer.
- Sunday Services
There are four ways to serve on Sunday's: the Connect Team, Coffee Team, Sound Team, and Children's Ministry. The Connect Team consists of greeters, ushers, and those who help with the offering. The Coffee Team shows up early and prepares the coffee for all three Sunday services. The Sound Team assists Michael in running the sound and the media slides. The Children's Ministry volunteers help check in kids and teach the Sunday classes for the young children and elementary age kids.
- Kids’ Gospel Community Leaders
The Children's Ministry is one of the most pressing needs at the church. Not only do we need more volunteers on Sunday's, but we also need Kids' Gospel Community leaders. As Gospel Communities continue to grow and increase in size, Kids’ Gospel Community leaders are very important. These leaders serve the different Gospel Communities by watching and teaching the children while the group meets.
- Media Team
One team we would like to develop is the Media Team. The Media Team would help produce videos for Sunday services and the website. This team would also help create graphic designs for the website or sermon art for different sermon series.
If you would like to volunteer please feel out this form. If you have any questions about volunteering please e-mail me at kade@redeemerlubbock.org.
